Jew Wishes On: Elie Wiesel Upcoming Release

According to Nextbook Press, Elie Wiesel has an upcoming book that entitled Rashi that will be released on August 11, 2009.

The first line of the press release reads as follows: “From Elie Wiesel, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, comes a magical book that introduces us to the towering figure of Rashi—Rabbi Shlomo Yitzhaki—the great biblical and Talmudic commentator of the Middle Ages. Wiesel brilliantly evokes the world of medieval European Jewry, a world of profound scholars and closed communities ravaged by outbursts of anti-Semitism and decimated by the Crusades.”.

This is definitely a book I will buy. I am an avid reader of Elie Wiesel, and personally own many of his books.

A just released book The Imposter’s Daughter, by Laurie Sandell is a graphic memoir about Laurie Sandell’s life, and it has received an excellent review from Tablet Magazine. Read the review here.

A Happy Marriage, by Jewish author Rafael Yglesias looks to be a poignant and compelling book, that has just been released. I am on my way to the book store to buy this once I submit this post.

I can’t close this post without mentioning this news story. One of the recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom is a 95-year old Crow Indian Chief and World War II Veteran, named Joe Medicine Crow. His story is inspiring in so many facets, including the fact he is a respected historian who earned his Master’s Degree in 1939!. During the war he went into “hand-to-hand combat with a German solider, and he also stole dozens of horses from a Nazi camp and retrieved dynamite while under fire that was used to attack German guns” (quoted from an MSNBC article). His story is quite inspiring, and you can read the entire article, here.

  1. This book sounds really good. Thank you so much for telling me about it!

—I love to read, especially books pertaining to World War II, and historical fiction in general. I gave Elie Wiesel’s speech once, and from then on, I have truly sought out his works.—

    • Cottage 27..thanks for visiting.

  2. A book about Rashi by Elie Wiesel certainly seems worth reading! Thanks for telling. A few weeks ago, we saw a cartoon movie about Rashi (based on a book by Rabbi Berel Wein). It was well-done.

Shabbat Shalom (is it really Friday?).

    • Leora: That cartoon film sounds interesting!

      I know…Friday already!

  3. Thanks for the link to the Elie Wiesel Foundation.
