Jew Wishes On: Monday Musings-July 13, 2009

Sunday saw me at the local library returning three books. I didn’t check out any new ones. I browsed through a local book store, and saw two books that I almost bought, but decided to wait until Tuesday when the new releases come out, and buy them then, along with any new releases I might want.

June was a busy month for reading. I read four novels that weren’t related to Judaism, along with ten Jewish-related books. I reviewed one book that I had read a few years ago…My Sister’s Keeper, by Jodi Picoult. Here is a list of the Jewish-related books I reviewed in June 2009:

City of Thieves, by David Benioff

The Golden Willow, by Harry Bernstein,

The Journal of Helene Berr, by Helene Berr

Kahn & Engelmann, by Hans Eichner

The Koren Sacks Siddur, by Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks

Loving Rabbi Thalia Kleinman, by Gary Morgenstein

A Lucky Child, by Thomas Buergenthal

My Sister’s Keeper, by Jodi Picoult

Strange Ways, by Rokhl Faygenberg

Songs for the Butcher’s Daughter, by Peter Manseau

Sunday Jews, by Hortense Calisher

  1. I find it so amazing how you manage to read all these books!
Where do you keep them all?! :)
Are you open to one suggestion to your reading list … ?

  2. Dina: I have several book cases. :)

    Yes, send along a suggestion.

  3. OK.
I think you would appreciate my Rabbi’s book:
_Hineni–Here I Am_ by Herman Schaalman,
    Ktav, c. 2007.
Born in Germany, ordained in America, lives in Chicago. Ad 120. He is 93 and had a rich and long rabbinate. He came up with a new and novel theology in the wake of the Shoah.

I am blessed to call him my Rabbi since 1961.

  4. Dina: Thanks for the book suggestion. I’ve checked online at the sites I order books from, and it looks as if it is out of stock. It sounds quite interesting.

  5. I am interested to see what you think of the song from the butcher’s daughter. The author is not Jewish but it is suppose to be a novel about Jews. I have always wondered what is considered a Jewish book. If the author is Jewish? or is it Jewish content? Since I have a Jewish book club it is hard to decide what the right answer is. Curious to know. I am looking forward to your review. Have a great week.

    Susan

  6. Really, out of stock? Emanuel Congregation could probably send you a copy. Please see the paragraph about the book at
    http://www.emanuelcong.org/aboutus/staff/

    • Dina: I will definitely check the Emanuel website out, and if they have copies will order one from them. Thanks!

  7. Tov meod!
