Why Faith Matters, by David J. Wolpe is a book that explores faith/religion and atheism. It is written concisely, and with sensitivity to varied religious beliefs or non beliefs. Wolpe, himself, was a practicing atheist in his younger days.
Wolpe is straightforward in his prose, and his background lends to the integration of his own illumination on faith within Why Faith Matters. He is introspective, often using religious history in order to make a point clear.
Wolpe feels that faith/religion hasn’t necessarily added to the various wars of the past and present (although many historians perceive it that way). He feels that without religion the situations would have been much worse than they were, incited by lack of faith or religion, with humanity’s bare bones and hatred spewing forth.
Wolpe uses quotations in order to reinforce his stance on religion, along with historical and Biblical background. “Since there can be no certainty that God does not exist – the most one can say is that there is no evidence of God – why are some so adamant in denying the possibility? His perspective is inspiring, poignant, compelling and reassuring. His insightful perspective is comforting, and if one has faith, they will still be illuminated by Wolpe’s words in Why Faith Matters.
His own medical battles have reinforced his faith, and his religious beliefs are stronger than they had been. He needs no proof that G-d exists. Which does not mean that Wolpe doesn’t ask questions, but means that he has found a religious outlet of faith and serenity within his environment. “When I discovered the explosive potential of questions – questions I was prepared to follow wherever they might lead – the world opened up.
The reader’s spirit, soul and mind will be fulfilled in many ways through reading Rabbi David J. Wolpe’s book. The debate on atheism vs religion is strong within the pages, and written with clarity. For those who do not believe, the book offers a different perspective to the debate for, or against, faith. The intellectual light, and the spiritual glow will definitely benefit the reader, no matter their faith/religion. Why Faith Matters is an excellent book, thoughtfully written, and leaving the reader with much to ponder.

Looks like a book I need to read. Would I be correct that he treats faith in the generic sense covering all faith traditions or does he emphasize one-his own to a degree?

John Paul: It is more or less generic, as you state, combining debate over religion and why we need faith, with atheism.
