While browsing The Jewish Daily Forward, I came across an article entitled A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Jew, written by Howard Shapiro. The article details the fact that Chaim Potok’s classic book My Name is Asher Lev has been adapted for the stage.
The Arden Theatre Company in Philadelphia, PA, premiered the play “My Name is Asher Lev” on January 14, 2009, and the play runs through March 15, 2009.
For those of you who are avid readers of the late Chaim Potok’s, work, and I am one of those bibliophiles, the stage version, by Aaron Posner, adapted from the novel, should be sure to please. The Arden Theatre’s “My Name is Asher Lev” has opened to rave reviews!
Why not stop by their website to read them.
You might want to visit the Chaim Potok website to read his biography, read about his essays, books, short stories and novellas, his interviews, and more about his novel “My Name is Asher Lev“.
Shabbat Shalom!

Ohhh! I wish I lived closer – that book is one of my all time favorites and Chaim Potok one of my favorite authors – hopefully they will mount a production out West – thanks for the info – btw I posted a couple of photos on my blog of the beginnings of an art project I’m participating in – don’t know where it’s going yet but somehow it has a Jewish feel to it – will keep you posted as it develops – Reva (Los Angeles)j

As you know I am also a Potok fan. Unfortunately I’ll never see this play… Sigh!

Interesting. I’ve always thought that the drama in Asher Lev lies in his internal struggles. There’s not much action or dramatic dialogue in the story itself. While the book is an incredible read, I wonder how well it translates on stage.

Raizy: I have thought the same as you, regarding his inner struggles. I hope the play doesn’t diminish that aspect.

This was the first Potok book I read and I loved it. I loved them all really, I’m sorry he’s no longer with us. This is so cool, I’d love to live where I could see it but I’m not even in the States. Oh well.
