While away last week, I bought several books. I have already written about one of them, and here are the names of the other three books.
The Girl From Foreign, by Sadia Shepard looks to be an interesting and educational book on many levels. The fact that she was raised by a Protestant father and Muslim mother, belies the fact that her maternal genealogical roots are Jewish. Her search for her ancestral identity looks to be a journey that is both intriguing and spiritually fulfilling.
Here is a blurb from the Penguin publisher’s website: “In this beautifully crafted memoir, a young half-Muslim, half-Christian woman travels to India to connect with a tiny Jewish community and unlock her family’s secret history“.
I can’t wait to begin reading it!
My Father’s Paradise, by Ariel Sabar, immediately drew me in from reading the front of the jacket. When I read the inside and the back of the jacket, I was sold! The front of the jacket reads: “A Son’s Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq‘.
“In My Father’s Paradise, father and son travel to today’s war-torn Iraq in a quest to rediscover a forgotten land. As Ariel retraces his father’s footsteps, he brings to life the eccentric characters, extraordinary determination, and fascinating historical odyssey of the Kurdish Jews.” Quoted from Ariel Sabar’s website. This book looks to be extremely fascinating, and filled with historical and educational information, beyond compare. I am moving it towards the top of my “to read” list.
A.B. Yehoshua is one of my favorite Israeli authors. I have previously read and reviewed some of his books. Each book has brought me insight into Israeli daily life, and the struggles occurring within Israel.
I bought his book, Friendly Fire, which has been translated by Stuart Schoffman. As in most of his books, this one also deals with death.
His books are very revealing, and deal with family, loss, love, and life within the ongoing struggles of cultural diversity and religion. This one looks to be as excellent as the others I have read.
