Jew Wishes On: Yahrzeit

On the death of a Jewish spouse, parent, child, sibling, the deceased is remembered on the anniversary of their death. The anniversary is figured out according to the Hebrew Calendar.

There are Yahrzeit traditions or rituals to help honor the memory of the deceased loved one. Lighting a Yahrzeit candle is one custom. The Yahrzeit candle is a special candle that burns for 24 hours. It is lit on the evening before the actual Hebrew anniversary date.

The Mourner’s Kaddish is also recited on the anniversary of the loved one. Others visit the graves of the deceased on the anniversary of their death.

Tomorrow night, after dark, I will light a Yahrzeit candle for my dear father. I will pray, get teary-eyed, and I will speak lovingly and softly to him. I will look at photographs of him, and remember the wonderful, special and treasured moments we had together when I was a child, and during his short 45-year lifespan on earth.

It’s difficult to believe that he has been gone for 48-years. The Yahrzeit candle will be lit, and he will be honored and illuminated through loving thoughts and remembrances. His memory is a beautiful Blessing.

Jew Wishes…Peace to you all.
