The State of Israel was declared on May 14, 1948. Arieh Handler, was one of 200 people invited to go to the ceremony.
Sixty years later, Arieh Handler is the only person out of the 200 invitees known to still be alive. He is 93-years old, and remembers the day clearly. In fact, Arieh Handler still has his original invitation.
His thoughts and memories of the events leading up to the declaring of Israel’s Independence are fascinating and compelling. The final moments were held in Tel Aviv, in the Museum of Art.

Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day, is celebrated each year on 5 Iyar, which is the anniversary of the State of Israel being established. This year Yom Ha’atzmaut is celebrated on Thursday May 8th.
