Jew Wishes On: Lithuania Shmoozing

There appears to be shmoozing happening in Vilnius!

Vilnius, Lithuania, which was once known as “The Jerusalem of Lithuania” has seen an uprise in the teaching of
Yiddish
, once a primary language spoken between the Jewish population. Yiddish was once the native tongue to hundreds of thousands of European Jews, including those in the Vilnius community of Lithuania. It is being taught in Vilnius, along with the cultural aspects, and not just the language, itself.

I remember my family members speaking Yiddish when they didn’t want me to know what they were talking about. They also spoke it with friends. It was an integral part of the the background dynamics of my growing up.

Yiddish is and was a language of commonality, the ties of language that bonded between Jews from all over the globe. No matter what Shtetl, city or country they came from, Yiddish was the one language most Jews understood, and could speak with each other. It is nice to see that the language is on the uprise, even a slow uprising.
