Jew Wishes On: Jewish Women in the Military

The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) was established on May 14, 1942, although “women have been serving in the U.S. Army since the birth of the country“. The Women’s Army Corps was vital during World War II, as over 150,000 women served their country.

Women have served in all branches of the U.S. military from the Navy, to the Air Force to the Marines, including Jewish women. The Jewish Women’s Archive (JWA), is an excellent resource for obtaining information on the role of Jewish women in the service. They are currently showcasing the various roles that Jewish women have played in U.S. Military.

Female nurses worked near the front lines during war. Phoebe Yates Levy Pember worked in military hospitals during the Civil War, helping to relieve the suffering of the soldiers.

The Navy Nurse Corps was officially established in 1908. The WAVES were established in July 1942, due to a shortage of Navy personnel.
On this Veteran’s Day let us not forget to remember all of the women who served their country…Jewish or otherwise. I thank each and every one of you.

The Jewish Women’s Archive holds an abundance of informative material, along with the Jewish Virtual Library, and most of the blurbs in this post come from those two websites.  I also took a sentence or two from Wikipedia.

Jew Wishes…Peace to All.
